Lubbock Needs an NFL Team, and Here’s How We Can Get One

When you think of the things that we are missing out on in Lubbock, having our own NFL Team doesn't usually pop to the top of the list. In fact, most people here are just fine being minions of The Dallas Cowboys or Houston Texans, or perhaps rooting hard for our hometown hero Patrick "I Own Tom Brady" Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs (who you can hear on Awesome 98).

However...for sake of argument, let's say that suddenly, we had a bonafide NFL franchise right here in the Hub City. How would that work? Can we support an NFL team in Lubbock? Is one even available? The answer to all of those questions is "probably not", but to quote Jim Carrey in "Dumb & Dumber": "SO YOU'RE SAYING THERE'S A CHANCE!"

Yes, there is...and it's all thanks to Covid-19. Follow me on this.

This past week, Santa Clara County, California placed even more serious restrictions on gatherings and events in that area due to the rapid spread of Covid-19, and the fact that California is where fun goes to die. In the order, they concluded that no "contact sports can be played" in the county during that time, which should last 14 days or so...but more likely, months. There is only one small problem with that. Santa Clara County happens to be the home of the defending NFC Champion San Francisco 49ers.

This means, that during the time of the order, the 49ers would not be allowed to play a home game, since (when last we checked) football is a contact sport. they have 2 home games slated for that time, which appear to need to be rescheduled or moved. To that last point...we have a solution.

THE LUBBOCK 49ERS!

We have a perfectly suitable stadium right here in the Hub City that the 49ers can use which frees them of any concerns surrounding local ordinances and restrictions. Besides, since they have not allowed any fans into Levi's Stadium this season due to local mandates, we can actually give The Niners a CROWD to play in front of at Jones AT&T Stadium! Yes, fans in the stadium, cheering on a team with a better record than the Cowboys!

On top of that, both San Francisco and Texas Tech have RED and BLACK in their primary color scheme...so it's almost too perfect a fit!

I can assure you...this has NOTHING to do with my being a lifelong 49er fan. That signed Joe Montana jersey in my office is just decor.  I have no ulterior motive, nor a desire for 50-yard-line seats. I just want to turn lemons into lemonade, and create solutions to modern problems.

Now...where is my giant Forty Niner Foam Finger?

UPDATE: The 49ers have reached an agreement with the Arizona Cardinals to play in Arizona for the time being. But, Arizona is full of retirees and feral hogs. So, they should really reconsider. Our offer still stands. Plus, we'll even throw in lunch at Whataburger.
