Cherries are one of the seasonal fruits that are both delicious and plentiful right now — and Brenda Garcia, the corporate dietician for United Supermarkets, was just talking with us about how to make the most of them.

Besides their sweet and tangy taste, cherries offer some nutritional benefits, too. They have a lower glycemic index than other fruits, making them a great option for diabetics. They also have anti-inflammatory properties and could help you get sweeter sleep if you eat some about an hour before bedtime, Garcia said.

To incorporate more cherries into your diet, consider freezing them on a cookie sheet while they are in season and then pulling them out of the freezer when you need that burst of flavor. You can pop frozen cherries and slices of lime in water for a refreshing treat, Garcia said.
