Are the Lubbock Splash Pads Loaded with Urine?
Splash pads at parks have become a popular way for kids to cool down in summer. Only drawback: They're sometimes loaded with URINE.
Lubbock has three splash pads for public use:
1. Rodgers Splash Pad: 3200 Bates Street
2. Mae Simmons Splash Pad: 1301 E. 24th Street
3. Maxey Splash Pad: 4020 30th Street
Splash Pads in Lubbock will are open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00am through 8:00 pm. and Monday's Noon-8:00 pm.
Each location features colorful ground sprays, water arches, spray loops and other interactive water elements according to the City of Lubbock. All splash pad locations also have covered picnic areas as well as covered seating, and restrooms.
Well, I just saw THIS story...
A splash pad in Tulsa, Oklahoma is in the news, because it's had to shut down at least seven times this summer thanks to contamination events...a.k.a., someone's kid PEED or POOPED in it.
A lot of them recycle the water and use it over and over. So it has to be tested regularly, just like public pools.
The one in Tulsa keeps testing positive. But most parents seem less annoyed by the urine itself, and more annoyed about showing up and finding out the splash pad is closed. It takes about six hours to fully clean it.
The ones that don't reuse water are easier to maintain and don't have to shut down as much.
The story reminded me of George Carlin's classic bit about swimming in the Hudson River as a kid, when it was filled with raw sewage...
