The Lubbock Police Department has made an arrest in relation to the fatal hit-and-run crash that happened back on Monday, November 16th.

It happened at around 1:40 p.m. at the intersection of Idalou Road and East 4th Street.

It's reported that a motorcycle was traveling eastbound in the 3200 block of East 4th Street while a Mitsubishi Lancer was traveling westbound in the 330 block of East 4th Street. Police say the Mitsubishi began to turn southwest onto Idalou Road when the 2 vehicles collided.

The Mitsubishi turned around and fled the scene.

The motorcycle driver, 70-year-old Benigno Salas, was transported to University Medical Center where he later died.

On Saturday, November 21st, investigators located and recovered the Mitsubishi which had been left in an empty field. The windshield had been broken out. On November 24th investigators identified the driver as 34-year-od Joseph Cruz of Brownfield. Cruz turned himself into police.

He told police that the Mitsubishi belonged to his girlfriend. KAMC News reports that Cruz was apparently heading to Sonic to get a job application. He said that after the collision happened, he noted Salas injured on the ground, but still fled after "he did not know what to do."

Cruz has been booked into the Lubbock County Detention Center for failure to stop and render aid.
