Clifton Shaw Elected Mayor of Slaton in Runoff Election
Saturday, two runoff elections were held in Slaton. The first was for Slaton Mayor and the second was for the Special Election, Slaton City Commissioner, Ward 4.
Slaton citizens elected Clifton "Clif" Shaw as their new mayor. Shaw beat John Gatica was previously ran for mayor in late 2019 to fill an unexpired term.
Shaw's supporters especially came out in support for him during early voting, where he held a 66.36% advantage to Gatica's 33.64%. Once all of the votes were counted on Saturday, Shaw finished with 61.92% of the vote (426 votes), and Gatica garnered 38.08% of the vote (262 votes).
In the Special Election for Slaton City Commissioner, Ward 4, this runoff is to fill an unexpired term. Valarie Cubit beat Frankie Cisneros by a total of 6 votes, 65-59. Cubit's election day turnout sealed the win, with Cubit earning 26 votes on Election Day, compared to Cisneros' 18 votes.
Slaton's ongoing transition with their city government won't end with the swearing-in of a new mayor later this month.
Right now, the City of Slaton has a job posting on their website for City Administrator, with a note about the first round of interviews happening around June 21.
The City of Slaton will be taking applications for the position of City Administrator. The City is seeking a highly qualified, self-motivated person for the position.
