We usually only get the stories about the U.S. Navy newbs. It's great to hear about somebody who's putting some serious time in as well.

So we have another Lubbockite who has traded the dry plains of Texas for life on the water. Wait, that's life under the water. Lt. Nicholas Holmes is now rockin' in a Submarine Squad in San Diego, California.

It's interesting that the troops involved with submarines are called "the silent service." It has to be just plain crazy for someone out of a place like Lubbock to head underwater for the first time. I would also think that some people would find it terribly claustrophobic and maybe even a bit terrifying. None of this seems to be a problem for Lt. Holmes, because he survived Coronado High School.

I'll drop a bit of the press release on you below, but if you'd like to know more about Nicolas and what he's doing, you can click here.

SAN DIEGO – A Lubbock, Texas, native is serving in the U.S. Navy assigned to Commander, Submarine Squadron 11 based out of Naval Base Point Loma, located in San Diego, California.

Lt. Nicholas Holmes, a 2011 Coronado High School graduate, joined the Navy five years ago.

“I joined the Navy because I wanted to do my part,” said Holmes. "I wanted to serve my country."

According to Holmes, the values required to succeed in the military are similar to those found in Lubbock.

“Growing up, I received a lot of support from friends, family and my community,” said Holmes. "That has definitely contributed to my trajectory in the Navy."
