In Texas, cricket season is usually August, September, and the first part of October. At our studios in Temple, we find dozens of these insects every morning.

Cricket Invasion in Texas

At one Dallas-area television station, they had to take a break from broadcasting the news because of a weird interruption.

The insect was driving KDFW FOX 4 News traffic reporter and anchor Chip Waggoner crazy. Meanwhile, the station's chief meteorologist Evan Andrews seemed to be enjoying the situation, spouting cricket trivia and smiling as Chip appeared to get more frustrated by the second. However, at the end of the clip, no crickets were reported to be injured.

(By the way, according to Evan, you can figure out what the temperature is outside by counting cricket chirps. Supposedly, the number of cricket chirps in 14 seconds plus 40 will give you the current temperature).

Can Crickets Cause Damage?

Pest World states that house crickets don’t cause health risks to humans, but they can cause property damage to clothes, carpets, and anything covered in fabric - especially wool, cotton, silk, and synthetics. In the case of a heavy infestation, crickets can destroy large areas of material, so it’s important to get rid of crickets as soon as possible.

The most effective way to remove crickets and prevent future infestations is to reduce areas of moisture in and around your home, according to Pest World. Mowing, removing weeds, and moving woodpiles away from your house will discourage the insects from coming inside.
