Have you ever wondered how much energy an appliance in your home is using? Or maybe you have wondered if those Energy Star ratings are really accurate. Well now you are in luck if you live in Lubbock.

The City of Lubbock announced on Friday that the Lubbock Public Library will now be carrying Electric Watt Meters that people can check out if they have a library card. According to the City of Lubbock, it is a new way for citizens to measure the energy consumption of certain appliances that are normally left on standby.

According to a City of Lubbock press release, here is how they work.

These meters plug into the wall, then an appliance or other piece of electrical equipment is plugged into the unit to determine the energy used by the plugged in item. The meter can tell you the energy usage alone, or you can use the meter and your energy bill combined to calculate the cost of an appliance over time.

The Electric Wall Meters can be found at all four Lubbock Public Library Locations and you are able to check them out for up to two weeks. If needed, you can renew your checkout as each location will have multiple meters available for check out.

The City of Lubbock didn't list why the meters are being kept at the Lubbock Public Library locations instead of Lubbock Power and Light or Citizens Tower, or high the demand will be for one of these meters. But it can be a useful tool for those who want to know.
