Update: LPD has released the name of the person who died in the explosion: 72-year-old John Fleming. One of three other victims of the explosion, 45-year-old Rodica Gelca, later died at University Medical Center, police say. The remaining two remain in the hospital, but are expected to recover.
Original story: An explosion at a central Lubbock home has killed at least one person and injured three others.
The explosion reportedly occurred Tuesday night at around 10 p.m. at a residential house at 2910 21st Street, in the area known as Tech Terrace. Lubbock Fire Rescue, EMS, Lubbock Police, and even a Hazmat team were called to respond to the explosion and ensuing house fire.
KCBD reports that residents heard and felt the explosion from blocks away, and windows from an adjacent house were shattered.
Upon arrival, emergency crews pronounced one person dead at the scene and at least three others had serious injuries. They were transported to University Medical Center for treatment, along with two Lubbock Fire Fighters who had minor injuries.
Investigators are not sure what caused the explosion, but it’s reported that they're not ruling out dangerous chemicals. The LPD's Persons Crime Unit has also been called to investigate.
