‘Godzilla’ Trailer: The King of the Monsters is Here!
After months (years!) of waiting, the official 'Godzilla' trailer is finally here! If you've seen either of the two Comic-Con trailers, you'll recognize some of the footage in this new 'Godzilla' trailer (in theaters next week with 'The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug'), but plenty of new stuff in here to get you excited too. Check this out!
Like, the first Comic-Con trailer, this new version features an ominous voiceover. "Frankly, none of us have ever faced a situation quite like this." The opening is one part of a larger sequence, as a group of Marines are preparing to jump out of a Halo chopper near where Godzilla himself is wreaking havoc. It's a beautiful shot as they're falling towards Godzilla, the red flare smoke billowing behind them as the monster comes into view. The second half of the trailer is a series of quicker cuts: Bryan Cranston looking terrified, Aaron Johnson looking horrified, Elizabeth Olsen looking scarified, a gaping hole in the side of a skyscraper, a giant explosion at an airport...and then, the big reveal.
Despite it being a 'Godzilla' trailer where destruction is the norm, it's actually very quiet. There's little in the way of big orchestral movements; no 'Inception' BRAHMMMs here. It's almost silent (minus the addition of the monolith theme used in '2001: A Space Odyssey' aka "Requiem for Soprano, Mezzo-Soprano, 2 Mixed Choirs and Orchestra" by György Ligeti), which makes the iconic Godzilla roar at the end even more impactful.
The official plot synopsis describes 'Godzilla' as such:
An epic rebirth to Toho’s iconic Godzilla, this spectacular adventure, from Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, pits the world’s most famous monster against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity’s scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence.
We, sadly, don't get a clear look at any of the "malevolent creatures" who Godzilla is battling, but hopefully we'll see some Mothra soon.
'Godzilla' opens in theaters on May 16, 2014.
