I am still finding the battle to decriminalize smaller amounts of marijuana highly entertaining.

The Latest

I am not at liberty to reveal my source, but I'm told that polling shows that Lubbock is nearly an even split on the topic of Proposition A in Lubbock. I was told that right now 51% are not in favor of the proposition while 49% are in favor of it. So, no matter which side you fall on, it's going to come down to who turns out the voters.

The Hypocrisy

Again, I'm an old guy who doesn't have a dog in this fight. I do believe 100% that you should have the right to put anything you want into your body, especially in your own home. What absolutely kills me is that the people who are against this ordinance held an event with a cash bar. YASSSS! That's right, they're pro-alcohol while being anti-marijuana. I'm wondering if everyone showed up in their own vehicles or just piled out of a clown car. Talk about poor optics.

What's At Stake

The "Protect Lubbock" folks also love to say that if this proposition passes it will "handcuff Lubbock police" which is also nonsense. Would you rather have police focusing on jaywalking and parking tickets, or on speeders and car thieves? This is the same thing. Supporters say it let's police know that we're much less concerned about pot than we are fentanyl or other killer drugs in our community.

What's Likely

Lubbock will no doubt be sued by the Texas Attorney General if this passes. It will be clear sign that Texas doesn't care about the will of the people, but instead about the pockets of their donors. It would also be a major blow against the Project Destiny people who are trying to legislate morality in the Hub City.

Oops

I am again trying to watch this as an amused observer, but recognize I am failing. I will neither be hurt nor overjoyed at the results of this election. I just find the "Reefer Madness" of it all ridiculous. What we have here is a grass roots organization that makes it's own cardboard signs against a very well-funded political organization, and holding their own. It's hilarious.
