Severe Weather Season Is Coming For Lubbock and the South Plains

Rain is expected for much of Lubbock and the surrounding areas beginning Friday and lasting on and off throughout the weekend. And we need it. Let's hope the forecasters are right on this one and we see at least a couple of days where we have moments of good rain showers or even thunderstorms.

Fortunately it doesn't appear as though we will see any severe weather this weekend with the rain that is moving through. But severe weather season is coming for Lubbock and the South Plains. Parts of Texas have already started to see Spring severe weather.

So how can you be prepared for Severe Weather Season? There are a few things you can do.

Have a Plan For Severe Weather

Have a plan for different instances of severe weather. It seems most people are worried about tornados, but massive hail storms and even localized flooding can be deadly and costly. In the event of a tornado, move to a basement or the most interior room without a window. If you get caught in a hail storm while driving, pull over and don't crowd underneath an overpass. Stay away from windows if you are at home. When it comes to tornados and large hail storms, many experts will say you don't want to be in an RV or mobile home. And when it comes to flooding rain. Remember the phrase "turn around don't drown".

Be Prepared For Severe Weather

Besides having a plan, be prepared. This means getting a few days of water and non-perishable foods just in case power goes out or something happens that causes destruction. Have blankets and a first aid kit, and have access to a weather radio. Also, just pay attention to the weather for that day and any watches or warnings that are issued.

Attend Severe Weather Awareness Day

The National Weather Service, along with the Science Spectrum will be hosting Severe Weather Awareness Day on March 23, 2024. From 10:00 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Lubbock Science Spectrum there will be activities and hands-on weather experiments for kids along with National Weather Service Forecasters who will have more information on being prepared, what watches and warnings mean and when they are issued, along with other great information.
