Texas Middle Schooler Arrested for Taking Gun and Ammo to School

A 14-year-old was caught bringing a handgun and multiple rounds of ammunition to school. He was arrested after showing the firearm off to a fellow student on the campus.

Vernon Middle School in Harlingen, TX had a recent scare when a student was seen brandishing a gun that he brought to school. According to MySA, he was caught after the sister of the student he showed the gun to told her parents who then alerted the principal (quite the game of telephone).

The teenager was taken into custody on Monday morning without any pushback. What was found in his backpack, along with the weapon, was about eight rounds of ammo inside of a loaded magazine. The gun itself was not loaded.

The 14-year-old is facing charges of unlawful carrying of a firearm on school premises. Further charges could be added as time progresses.

According to MySA, Harlingen Consolidated School District stated that the staff and students at the school will always remain their top priority, and they appreciate the community for help in this venture.

What Happens if You Bring a Gun to Gun-Free Zones?

Nothing pretty, that's for sure. It really depends on a variety of factors. For instance, if you do not have a license to carry, you have a criminal history or you're intoxicated.

Punishments range from class A misdemeanors to third-degree felonies. Fortunately, for our little Lone Ranger from our story, he will most likely only be charged with UCW (unlawful carrying weapon): a class A misdemeanor.

This comes with a fine of up to 4 grand in Texas and the potential of up to a year in jail.
