Last week, the lone holdover from the Matt Wells coaching staff, DeAndre Smith, announced he was leaving the Texas Tech program to take the same position with the NFL's New York Giants.

A great promotion for Smith left Joey McGuire with a hole in his staff. To fill the empty spot on the coaching staff Joey McGuire tabbed C.J. Ah You, but not as the running backs coach. There will be some shifting around to accommodate the new hire.

The special team's coordinator Kenny Perry will assume the extra duties of coaching the running backs, while Ah You will take over as the outside linebackers coach. Josh Bookbinder, who was originally announced as the secondary coach and moved to linebackers coach, will shift to inside linebackers coach with Ah You’s hiring.

“We’re excited how this staff came together with Coach Ah You being the final piece,” Joey McGuire said on texastech.com. “To coach at Texas Tech, you have to possess the passion to inspire and build relationships with our players, and that describes Coach Ah You perfectly. We’re excited to welcome him and his wonderful family to our Red Raider family.”

Ah You played linebacker at Oklahoma and was the Big 12 Defensive Newcomer of the Year as a junior in 2005 and garnered All-Big 12 first-team honors as a senior. Ah You began his collegiate career at BYU and also played at Snow College before landing in the Big 12 in 2005. After playing at OU, Ah You played for six seasons in the NFL with the St. Louis Rams.

After his playing career Ah You coached at Oklahoma and Vanderbilt before serving as the DL coach for the New York Guardians. He then had brief stops with the Chargers in the NFL and USC before being hired as a position coach by Nevada this offseason.
