June’s ‘Strawberry’ Full Moon Rises Friday Night

On Friday, June 5th, the next full moon will appear, rising over Lubbock beginning at 9:06 p.m.

The June 'Strawberry Moon,' also known throughout history by other names including, 'Honey Moon' and 'Hot Moon.' According to NASA, the name 'Strawberry Moon' comes from the season for harvesting strawberries in the northeastern United States.

NASA's Solar System Exploration website also suggests, "As usual, the wearing of suitably celebratory celestial attire is encouraged in honor or the full moon." I'm not exactly sure what suitable celebratory celestial attire looks like, but for me, I'll be celebrating in my pajamas.

June's full moon will last for three days, starting early Thursday morning and lasting through early Sunday morning.

Fortunately, it appears that our weather for Friday through Sunday favors being able to see the full moon at its best, which is said to be during moonrise in the east-southeast and moonset toward the west.

Experts suggest that the best angle and colors will be visible while the moon is closest to the horizon, which also makes this full moon look larger than normal.
