Kick Off The 2023 Buddy Holly Summer Showcase & Get Funky Lubbock
The summer is not officially here yet but we are almost there and one way to get ready, aside from getting a tasty snow cone, is to attend the kick off event of the Buddy Holly Center Summer Showcase. This yearly event is a staple of the summer here in the Hub City because it allows Lubbock natives, and visitors, the opportunity to take in a part of what makes Lubbock great. It's local talent.
I'm not talking about just musicians but also food trucks and artists that will be at this weekly summer party. Kicking off this years Buddy Holly Center Summer Showcase is Lubbock's very own funk band, Element. If you are new to the summer showcase then this is one band you don't want to miss because who can resist a little bit of funk to end the work week.
Element was started back in 2004 and has not disappointed the public at all with their warm and uplifting sound that just gets you on your feet. Who doesn't want to get a little bit funky? I did decide to give Element a listen so that I could give my first impression of this classic, and iconic, local band. Element's sound gives off this certain nostalgia that takes me back to those nice warm Sunday's during the summer of when I was a kid in the late 90's and early 2000's. They make you feel cozy and at home but also just hit your soul and bones with their special sort of West Texas funk. It's like they have some sort of special ingredient in their music that they lovingly share with the community.
This band's music does uplift my soul and I bet it could do the same to the community but back in 2020 the band needed some uplifting themselves. It was during that time that they did lose one of their of their founding members, Freddie Curry, who was a singer and bass player for the band from the very beginning. Curry is missed but not forgotten as his legacy lives on through the band and their love of music.
Element will play from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 18th, 2023 at the Buddy Holly Summer Showcase, located in the Meadows Courtyard at the Buddy Holly Center. Admission is free to the public. Chairs, picnic blankets, pets, outside food and beverages are not allowed but there here will be food trucks and activities for kids. More information about Element and where they will be playing next can be found online.
