The Lubbock County Medical Society has sent a letter to Lubbock Mayor Dan Pope and the Lubbock City Council asking them to prohibit mass gatherings, among other things.

This plea also asked for the enforcement of mask requirements and social distancing.

KAMC News reports that according to Johns Hopkins data, Lubbock was ranked among the top 8 US counties for average daily COVID-19 deaths. Lubbock County averaged 6 COVID-19 deaths in the week of November 1st.

The letter says that because of the increasing number of patients who must be hospitalized and the decreasing number of hospital and ICU beds, space for non-COVID-19 patients is extremely limited, and that they must be sent elsewhere. The Medical Society says that this will lead patients to choose not to go to a hospital and risk serious injury.

The letter goes on to say that while medical workers continue treating patients in the West Texas area, the Lubbock community continues to gather at large events and ignore mask ordinances and social distancing protocols, leading to unnecessary exposures.

The Lubbock County Medical Society has asked that the following measures be implemented by the Lubbock City Council:

  • Limitation of gatherings to 10 or less
  • Masks to be worn properly at all times
  • Social distancing
