We're VERY fortunate to live in a town with so many great options for food!

We also have a LOT of different options when it comes to calzones, but it wasn't always the case in the Hub City.

Back in the day, if you wanted a calzone in Lubbock, Texas, you really only had one option, and it was a GOOD one...Jerry Mazzamuto!

(That's Jerry's son Girolamo, me, and Jerry)

I discovered Jerry's calzones as a kid attending Monterey High School. We would all load up in a friend's car and head to the One Guy From Italy location near Tech. Originally, we went to stare at the co-eds who, of course, never talked to us. We kept coming back for the calzones! (And the co-eds)

I became good friends with Jerry through my boss and mentor, Lew Dee. Lew was of Italian heritage and he and Jerry were best buds. I would get to know Jerry very, very well over the years as I listened to those two talk over glasses of wine, delicious homemade pasta and pizzas, and many many of his calzones.

There's just something special that makes his better than anyone else's! It's absolutely STUFFED with Italian sausage, pepperoni, gooey cheese and tangy sauce. It's PERFECT! Plus, the crust has as much crunchiness as it does chewiness. I have no idea how he does it but it's just [chef's kiss].

Jerry eventually moved to Las Vegas and then someone else bought the original One Guy From Italy and the business continued as it does to this day with two Lubbock locations.

When Jerry came back to the Hub City, he opened a brand-new restaurant called Papa V Pizza near 82nd & Slide road where he serves his original recipe pizzas, calzones and more alongside his son.

Stop in, see Jerry and Girolamo and their crew, order a calzone and listen to Jerry tell you how good looking you are...at least I THINK that's what he's saying.
