Local Lubbock: Celebrating National Vinyl Record Day
Most National Days fall into one of two categories. There's really boring national days like May 13th: National Crouton Day, a day to celebrate toasted old bread. And there's really stupid ones like October 19th: National Hagfish Day. WTF is a hagfish?
But some national days deserve to be celebrate. National Lipstick Day on July 29th usually means there's great makeup deals. And the first Friday in June is National Donut day, which usually sees some freebies. However, my heart belongs to August 12th: National Vinyl Record Day.
Music enthusiast and founder of the first nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation of the cultural influence of vinyl, Gary Freiberg created National Vinyl Record Day as a way to honor the art behind the music, collecting, and recording.
I am very fond of the buttery sound and the stunning beauty of vinyl records. I've been collecting for years and the best place to get records in Lubbock is Ralph's Records on 82nd & Indiana.
First, they have a massive selection that's thoughtfully curated into categories. Here's the Hip Hop/ Rap, the Oldies and Punk/ Post-Punks sections, for example:
Second, Ralph's carries both new and used vinyl, so whether you're looking for something vintage or something brand-new, they've got you. And there's a "just in" rack for those of us who stop by frequently:
Most importantly, Ralph's Records has the nicest and most knowledgeable staff on the planet. I dropped in this morning and saw two of my favorite people in the world, Chris and Doug. Ralph's has been lovingly providing for Lubbock's entertainment needs for over 40 years now. That's so incredibly special and cool.
So if you choose to celebrate vinyl today or any day, I highly encourage to shop local. You'll love the experience. In case you're wondering, I picked up a Funkadelic record for myself.
