How Does the Lubbock Abandoned Vehicle Auction Work?
Lubbock city code states that once a vehicle is left unclaimed in police custody for 60 days, it’s eligible for auction. These auctions are open to the public—no dealer license required. You’ll need a valid ID, and cash is usually the name of the game.

Many Texas cities run similar events—Houston’s auction, for example, allows public bidding on abandoned cars but strictly sells salvage vehicles to licensed salvage dealers. Buyers are expected to inspect vehicles visually during limited walk-around windows and take titled vehicles “as is”.
On winning a bid, you're handed an Auction Sales Receipt, which you take to the county tax office to transfer the title into your name. Be ready to act fast—some locations expect you to take possession almost immediately, and sales are final.
Why It Matters
From clunky project cars to daily driver-ready rides, abandoned vehicle auctions offer a wide range of options. Whether you're looking for a bargain, a fixer-upper, or simply a unique find, Saturday's sale gives Lubbock residents a direct line to affordable wheels!
