It’s Not Just You—Lubbock Roads Feel Wild for a Reason

If you’ve ever been sitting at the light at 82nd and Quaker and wondered why someone behind you is laying on the horn the literal second it turns green, you’re not imagining things—Lubbock drivers are a little extra. And apparently, so is the rest of America. A brand-new survey from AAA found that 96% of American drivers admit to performing at least one aggressive driving behavior in the past year.

What Counts as “Aggressive”?

When AAA says aggressive, they’re not just talking about going full-on “Fast & Furious” around the Loop. The list includes stuff most of us see (or do) every day around Lubbock:

  • Running red lights (hello, Slide Road at 5:15 p.m.)

  • Speeding (I-27 might as well be a racetrack some days)

  • Tailgating

  • Honking out of anger

  • Cutting off other drivers

The study shows “cutting off vehicles” and “angry honking” are actually on the rise compared to 2016, while tailgating and yelling out the window have dipped a little. Still, if you’ve driven down University Avenue on a Friday night, you know yelling hasn’t completely gone out of style.

When Aggressive Becomes Violent

Here’s where things get a little scarier: 11% of drivers admitted to violent actions. That means intentionally bumping into another car or even confronting another driver. That’s not just road rage—that’s a trip to the Lubbock County Detention Center waiting to happen.

And based on the data, people under 60 and folks making more than $100,000 a year are most likely to drive this way. So yes, if you get cut off by a Tesla or a Ford Raptor on Loop 289, the odds just went up that it’s “aggressive by choice.”

Lubbock’s Own Brand of Road Madness

If you’ve driven around town for any amount of time, you already know this survey makes perfect sense. Between the red-light runners at 50th and Indiana, the drag racers who use the West Loop like it’s Texas Motor Speedway, and the guy who honks at you when you don’t immediately turn into a Dairy Queen parking lot—you could write a whole book about “Lubbock driving behavior.”

The good news? Being aware of it is half the battle. The bad news? You’re still sharing the road with 96% of people who admit they drive aggressively.

So next time you head out in the Hub City, give yourself some grace, leave a little extra time, and maybe resist the urge to join in the madness. After all, we’ve already got plenty of “crazy drivers” in Lubbock—we don’t need another one!
