Good news for folks living outside the city limits — the Lubbock County burn ban has officially been lifted as of April 23, 2025. If you’ve been waiting to clean up brush or burn off that pile of limbs in the backyard, the coast is finally clear... with a few important reminders.

Who Was Affected by the Burn Ban?

Back on March 24, the Lubbock County Commissioners Court issued a 30-day burn ban for certain unincorporated parts of the county due to increased wildfire risk. Now, thanks to improving fire conditions and a lower threat of wildland fires, the Commissioners Court has chosen not to renew the ban.

The burn ban originally impacted the fire response zones covered by these departments:

But just because the ban is lifted doesn’t mean it’s a free-for-all. County officials are still urging residents to follow all state outdoor burning guidelines, which can be found here via the TCEQ.

Important Safety Reminders!

  • If the National Weather Service issues a Red Flag Warning, no outdoor burning is allowed, regardless of burn bans.

  • These rules only apply to the unincorporated areas of Lubbock County — cities and towns still do not allow outdoor burning inside city limits.

  • Planning a controlled burn? Be sure to call the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Dispatch at (806) 775-1600 before you light anything.

For questions or more information, reach out to the Lubbock County Office of Emergency Management at (806) 775-7300.

Stay safe out there — and don’t forget to keep that water hose handy!
