The collision happened around 9:15 a.m., while deputies were assisting a stranded motorist on the side of the highway. According to officials, the semi collided with the patrol unit during the response.

Emergency crews from the Lubbock Police Department, the Department of Public Safety, and the Lubbock Fire Department rushed to the scene. In total, three people were taken to the hospital—two deputies with serious injuries and one civilian with minor injuries.

The families of the deputies have already been notified, and the Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office says updates on their conditions will be released when more information becomes available.

Investigation Underway

The Lubbock Police Department’s Major Crash Unit is handling the investigation into exactly how this wreck occurred. Details remain limited, but investigators will be working to determine what caused the semi to collide with the patrol vehicle in the first place.

UPDATE FROM LCSO AT 12:48 PM ON 9/8/25

Two Lubbock County Sheriff's Deputies are recovering at UMC hospital this afternoon. Deputies Cavazos and Martinez were involved in this morning’s accident on Southbound Hwy 87 and the 98th Street overpass. The deputies were outside of their parked patrol units, assisting a stranded motorist, when a semi-truck collided with the empty rear patrol unit. The deputies were trapped between the disabled patrol unit and the guardrail of the 98th Street overpass. Good Samaritans at a nearby gas station witnessed the event and quickly moved to aid the deputies. The accident itself is still under investigation by the Lubbock Police Department's Major Crash Unit. The deputies involved, and the civilian who sustained minor injuries, are all expected to recover. The Lubbock County Sheriff's Office would like to thank everyone who worked to support the deputies until additional first responders arrived on scene. Additionally, we would like to remind everyone on the roadway to slow down and move over any time they see a vehicle parked on the side of the road.

A Call for Support

The Sheriff’s Office is asking the Lubbock community to keep both deputies and their families in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. It’s another reminder of the risks our local law enforcement faces every day while simply trying to keep the roads safe.

Highway 87 was backed up for much of the morning as crews worked the scene, and traffic delays stretched through late morning hours before the area was cleared.

The Bottom Line

Two of Lubbock County’s own are fighting through serious injuries today after doing what they do every single day—helping others in need. I’ll continue to keep an eye on updates from the Sheriff’s Office and bring you the latest as soon as it’s available.
