Cases of coronavirus continue to fall in Lubbock. After months of high new cases each day and high hospitalization rates, Lubbock is seeing numbers drop.

Add in the fact that people in Lubbock seem eager to receive the coronavirus vaccination, it all adds up to very good news for those living in Lubbock. According to KAMC, Lubbock City Councilman and Mayor Pro Tempore Steve Massengale said he believed 38 percent to the eligible population had already received the vaccine.

That's good news and it helps that Lubbock leads Texas in the amount of people who are eligible, get vaccinated. According to KAMC, the City of Lubbock is now looking at expanding which venues can reopen safely.

And as spring nears, local venues are being opened back up with some restrictions based on the number of people attending an event.

“We are ready to approve outdoor events again,” said Massengale. “We’’ll go back to the protocols we were using before we locked down because of hospitalization.”

Health experts warn that all even with all this good news it doesn’t mean masks can stop being worn.

“Because our numbers are so low, don’t think that we are out of the woods,” Dr. Cook said. “Don’t let your guard down, wear your mask, and socially distance. This virus is still very, very lethal and we don’t know who will do poorly.”

In May, it's expected that the City of Lubbock will be able to reopen the amphitheater. Of course, if numbers reverse and get worse, the City of Lubbock can close down the outdoor venues. You can get more information on which outdoor venues are open here.
