A Lubbock woman who was initially charged with murder has taken a plea deal for aggravated assault.

The incident in question happened back on August 20th, 2017 a bit before 6 a.m. KAMC News reports that Lubbock Police were called to the 5800 block of Avenue G, where they located 38-year-old Randale Roshawn Stewart with a stab wound to his upper left chest. He was transported to University Medical Center and later pronounced dead.

Police say that Stewart and the suspect, now-33-year-old Lasherria Hastings, were a married couple and had gotten into an argument. The exact nature of the argument wasn't specified in news reports. Hastings allegedly stabbed Stewart before running away.

Hastings' attorney, Laurie L. Key, said that this was a case of self defense, and a strong one, at that. However, Stewart's family argued that he was the victim of family violence, not the other way around. Key retaliated by saying that Stewart wasn't the same person when he was using drugs or alcohol. She also argued that Hastings showed that she was a law-abiding citizen while she was out on bond.

Key claimed she was willing to go forward with Hastings to trial, but since "you never know what a jury is going to do," according to her, Hastings decided to take an offer of 10 years for aggravated assault from prosecutors.
