A Lubbock woman was struck in the head by a stray bullet on the 4th of July, and police are investigating this case as an assault.

KAMC News reports that an officer initially responded to the 500 block of East 79th Street, between Joyland Park and the Canyon Run Dog Park for reports of an assault. This was a bit before 9:45 p.m. at night.

The victim had already been taken to the hospital by the time an officer arrived at the scene.

The victim, who wasn't identified, says that she and her friends were sitting on the lawn watching fireworks when she felt something hit her head and make her ears start ringing. Her friends shined a light on her to find out what it was, and noticed that she was bleeding from her head and got blood on her shoes. They even found a bullet shell casing on the ground nearby.

The victim said that no one nearby was shooting a firearm, and no one else was injured besides herself. Initially, it was reported that the woman was shot in the chest, but it's now said that she was shot in the head.

Since the person that fired the weapon caused this woman's injury, the case is being investigated as an assault.

As of Wednesday, July 7th, no suspects had been named or located.
