A Lubbock worker was shot in the head on Saturday, August 27th, 2022 after a firearm accidentally went off inside a house where he was working.

KAMC News reports that Lubbock Police responded to the 2600 block of 26th Street for a possible shots fired call. This was at around 3:40 p.m.

Initially, it was believed that the man suffered injuries from something mechanical exploding in his face. It was later revealed, however, that the man who owned the home had a "negligent discharge" of his firearm and "hit a worker at his house."

The responding officer arrived to find a man between two residences with blood on his head and legs. The homeowner, John Karika, was applying gauze to the victim's right eye. Karika had blood on his clothing and hands and there was a damaged window nearby, consistent with a bullet impact.

Karika told officers that the firearm in question was on a table inside his house. Police noted that Karika appeared visibly upset, but did not show signs of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs of any kind. How exactly the firearm discharged wasn't made immediately clear.

The worker was transported to University Medical Center with moderate injuries and Karika was transported to the Lubbock County Detention Center on a $30,000. He was released from jail soon after being booked.
