New Head Coach Matt Wells Delivers Powerful Speech to Texas Tech Football Team
Texas Tech's new head football coach Matt Wells arrived in Lubbock Friday and wasted no time making his mark on the program.
Wells was introduced to the football team by the school's Athletic Director, Kirby Hocutt.
"We're still in transition. Change is hard. A lot of emotions, but today marks the healing stage and the process forward," Hocutt told the team. "I'm proud each and every day to represent each and every one of you. You're good men, and you make me proud every day, and you make Texas Tech University proud."
Hocutt then introduced Wells, who said he was excited and honored to take over as head coach at Texas Tech. One of the first things Wells hammered home to the players was the type of mentality he would foster.
"I want you to understand, around this place, we'll always be a 'we, us and our' program," Wells said. "Everything that we do is about that logo, that double T. That double T right there, it's bigger than one person. Everything's about that logo."
Wells concluded his first team speech with a self-aware realization about the nature of the situation.
"I just want you to know, I chose you," Wells said. "We -- Coach Patterson, Coach Yost, and some of these guys that are coming in here real quick -- we chose you. You didn't choose me. And you know what? I get that. I get it. I'm good with it right now. Give us a chance. Give me a chance. Give these guys a chance. Get to know us. Because you don't really care if we can coach one bit until you know that we care about you."
Wells will be introduced to Lubbock proper at a press conference Saturday morning (December 1) at the United Supermarkets Arena, Texas Tech Athletics announced. It's open to the public (via the northwest and southwest entrances on Indiana Avenue), and the doors open at 10 a.m. Free parking will be available in the lots immediately north and west of United Supermarkets Arena, the school announced. Wells is scheduled to speak at 11 a.m.
Texas Tech will also stream the event on its Facebook and Twitter pages, and broadcast it live on TexasTech.TV.
