Tuesday's high winds and extremely dry conditions across West Texas were ripe for the development of wildfires.

Tuesday afternoon, around 2pm, a wildfire broke out in Lubbock County near the intersection of North County Road 1300 and County Road 6400. The fire engulfed open grass land, a mobile home and a travel trailer.

KAMC News reported that volunteer fire departments from Shallowater, West Carlisle and Wolfforth initially battled the blaze.

The Texas A&M Forest Service named the wildfire the 'Research' fire. As of 8pm on Tuesday night, the Research wildfire was reported to be 95 percent contained at just over 61 acres in size. No injuries had been reported.

Also on Tuesday, the Texas A&M Forest Service reported the Little Buffalo wildfire was 95 percent contained in southwest Randall County. It reached 400 acres in size.

Closer to Lubbock, the Plum Creek wildfire in Crosby County was reported to be 100 percent contained as of Tuesday night. It reached 460 acres in size.

Firefighters in Howard County are still battling the Mitchell wildfire. It is located in open land in Howard County in an area bounded by US 87 to the west, FM 846 to the south and FM 1584 to the east. As of Tuesday night, the Mitchell wildfire was 95 percent contained at 860 acres in size.

The critical wildfire danger continues on Wednesday with a Red Flag Warning in effect from 10am to 9pm. Relative humidity levels will be near 5 percent across Lubbock, the South Plains and the surrounding regions. Also, winds will be out of the west-northwest at 20 to 30 mph at the 20' foot level.
