Something New May Be Coming to Lubbock’s Old Cattle Baron Location
It's been since June that the Kingsgate Center location of Cattle Baron closed its doors due to the pandemic, never to reopen. Interestingly enough, a quick Google Search turns up a page on the Cattle Baron website that has the Covid-19 closure announcement about that location.
However, this past weekend, I saw a "SOLD" sign in front of the building facing 82nd Street, instilling some hope that perhaps Cattle Baron may rise like a phoenix from the ashes of a wonderful steak dinner. Whether that's the case or not remains to be seen.
If you look through the windows and take a peek inside and essentially trespass (as I did), the interior of the building looks almost exactly as it did when the doors were locked over six months ago.
Tables have salt and pepper shakers ready to go, and there's a bar that just needs to be restocked, almost appearing as if the next shift should be arriving to open for dinner service soon.
I would recommend that whomever may have purchased the property may want to change out the sugar packets. Those look like they've been there a while -- just sayin'.
While the Cattle Baron itself may be destined to stay in Lubbock's past, the new owner has practically a turnkey operation to start from. Unless they decide to more or less gut the building and start fresh. We did reach out to the commercial realtor to try and find out who may have purchased the location and what plans they have. However, we have yet to get a call back.
Let's also hope that whatever eventually opens in its place will be unique yet respectful to the legacy of the Cattle Baron, while still blazing their own new trail on the Lubbock culinary scene.
