It may only be January, but Target is already laying out its holiday hours by announcing that they will be closed for Thanksgiving this year.

Target got such an overwhelmingly positive response from its closure last year that they've decided to do it again in 2021.

The COVID-19 pandemic has altered all our lives, and that includes the way we shop now. Curbside pickup is more prevalent now, and limited instore capacity is now a thing as businesses continue to grapple with the ongoing pandemic.

Last year, Walmart set the tone by announcing that they would be closed to give its employees the holiday to enjoy time with their families. Soon after, dozens of other retail giants like Target, Best Buy, Costco, and Home Depot announced that they would also close on Thanksgiving Day.

Black Friday was also approached differently, as most retailers did not host their usual early morning one-day events. Instead, retailers began offering daily specials and Black Friday deals in early November and culminating with more sales day-of, in-store, and online to avoid overcrowding store capacity.

Although we are still in the middle of a raging pandemic and vaccines are slowly but surely rolling out, nobody is sure what the future holds for this fall.

Pandemic or not, giving employees Thanksgiving Day off to spend more time with their families, gets a gold star in my book.

No word yet if other stores will follow, but we’ll keep you posted.
