Well, this is terrible. Texans should be ashamed of this.

The Lone Star State has a problem, and I haven't heard the politicians talking about this one. Texas leads the nation in sex offenders.  You might think, "well it's a big state" but it's not just that. Let's break it down.

Texas has nearly 100,000 thousand sex offenders, while second place California comes in at 60,000. Do I need to mention how much more populous California is than Texas? Those numbers are really, really bad.

Texas has about 340 sex offenders for every 100,000 thousand people which is actually a median kind of number, but it's high enough that when you put it together with the total population, we far outdistance any other state in the number of people on the books. Aforementioned California has 152 offenders for every 100,000 people.

Taking a look next door at New Mexico, they have 141 sex offenders for every 100,000 thousand people (yes, that's less than half as much)

I guess if you wanted to minimize this problem you could say that Texas just does a better job of registering sex offenders, but I think that's just living in denial. Our elected officials need to shine some light on this problem and figure out how to get us moved down the list.

Many of these stats come courtesy of a website called Safehome.org.  You might want to drop by and check out other states and how they rank on this list that no one wants to be on.
