The “Frozen” Soundtrack is the Only Album That’s Gone Platinum in 2014
We're nearly 10 months through 2014, and only ONE album has gone platinum...meaning it's sold over a million copies. That album is the "Frozen" soundtrack. And it's not likely that any other album will do it before the end of the year.
This would mark the first year on record...dating back to 1976...that no individual act's album went platinum. For perspective, last year at this time, FIVE albums had already hit the milestone, and 10 had done it by the end of the year.
Lorde's "Pure Heroine" and Beyonce's self-titled album are the closest to hitting the one million mark, but they most likely won't. Neither has reached 800,000 copies this year, and sales of both have already pretty much tapered off.
As for upcoming albums, Taylor Swift has a shot at doing it by the end of the year. Her new pop album, "1989", comes out on October 27th...so she'll have a little over two months. Her previous albums have sold well over a million copies.
