The 44th Annual St Joseph Sausage Festival comes to Slaton October 19th & 20th!

For 44 years now, a secret-recipe German sausage has been served in Slaton at Saint Joseph Hall. Those 44 years of German sausage-making will culminate in a feast on


Sunday, October 20, when the Saint Joseph Sausage Festival and Funfest is held there once again. Dinner is served at Saint Joseph Hall - 21st and Division (FM 41) Streets, Slaton - from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The main menu consists of German sausage, grilled chicken, homemade German potato salad, green beans, and home-made cakes and bread. Saint Joseph's German Sausage Festival began in 1969 with a 200-year-old recipe from Austria belonging to Marie Bednarz. The recipe was multiplied for the Slaton version. The first year, 524 pounds of sausage were made. This year, 8,000 pounds will be produced. Jalapeños are added to 2,200 pounds for those who like a little more spice. Again this year-for extra spicy sausage-habañero peppers will be added to 800 lbs. Preparation starts months in advance. During Sausage week, church members, school parents and friends gather to make 600 pounds of German potato salad and 150 loaves of homemade bread, and Saint Joseph Ladies Quilters make quilts. Adult plates are $9.00 and children's plates are $6.00. Take-out plates will be available at the south side of the hall. Sausage (uncooked and vacuum sealed) will be also sold by the pound at Saint Joseph Hall on Saturday, October 19, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Regular Sausage, $4.75/lb.; Jalapeño Sausage, $5.50/lb.; and, Habañero Sausage, $6.25/lb. Funfest, Sunday, October 20th, 11 a.m. - 4 p.m., next to the Hall, the Fun Fest will be celebrated at Saint Joseph School. The Funfest includes silent and live auctions, bingo, games, music, food, quilting show, rock wall and spider climb, country store, a mini-bazaar, and raffles for quilts and a cedar chest.
