What did you do in the summer of 1999?  If you don't remember, play "Smooth"...the Santana/Rob Thomas song that was EVERYWHERE that summer...and it'll all come flooding back to you.

So, why are we talking about this now?

Well, someone wants "Smooth" to represent more than just the summer of 1999, because they've created a petition asking that it replace "Hail to the Chief" as the official Presidential Anthem of the United States. (???)

The petition says, quote, "Playing 'Smooth' shall precede the appearance of the President at official functions and gatherings. The song shall be performed by an appropriate live band...ideally, Carlos Santana and Rob Thomas."

Last I checked, the petition only had around 250 signatures, so it hasn't really caught on yet. Since it's on the White House's petition site, if this thing somehow gets 100,000 signatures by April 2nd... the government will issue a response.

Nothing will probably come of it, but you never know. After all, this IS the presidency of hope and change.
