Political neophyte Tommy Tuberville is one step closer to becoming a U.S. senator.

Tuesday night, Tuberville beat former U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions in the Republican Primary Runoff for U.S. Senate in Alabama.

The Birmingham News reported the initial results for the election:

The Associated Press called the race at 8:19 p.m., a little more than an hour after polls closed. With 774 of 2,281 precincts reporting, unofficial results show Tuberville garnered 88,015 votes – or 62% - to Sessions’ 53,277 or 38%.

Later in the evening, with 65 percent of the precincts reporting, Tuberville's lead had increased by a percentage point over Sessions:

Tuberville will face Democrat Doug Jones in the November 2020 general election. Tuberville was the head coach for Texas Tech Football from 2010-2012.
