If you thought we were done with COVID-19 and things would go back to normal this summer and beyond, it appears as though that may not be as easy as we thought.

Don't get me wrong. People are tired of COVID-19. Business owners are tired of COVID-19 and the shutdowns that go along with it. People are tired of wearing masks and being locked up.

Yet, tune into any national news broadcast or log onto any national news website and the warnings about the coronavirus and the delta variant are all over the place. In L.A., citizens are being asked to wear masks again, even if they're vaccinated.

On Monday, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommended that all children over the age of two wear a mask when going back to school.

On Monday, the University of Texas COVID-19 model was updated and it predicts a surge in coronavirus cases throughout Texas, including here in Lubbock. The model says there is an 88 percent chance that the epidemic is growing.

I hope I'm wrong, but this all seems familiar and seems to be leading to something we have seen before: restrictions.

Now, I don't think we will see Texas shutdown again. It's hard for me to believe that Governor Abbott would give those orders or that business owners would do it. But I do think we will see counties, cities and school districts attempt to do their own type of restrictions in the name of public health. And they will have the blessing of the federal government, by the way.

Another shutdown would be horrible for Texas, but I do think there are some who will want it. The same people who want another national shutdown. Again, I hope I'm wrong.
