At the peak of summer, nothing is more refreshing than a cool, sweet watermelon.

United Supermarkets' Corporate Dietitian Brenda Garcia shared these tips from watermelon.org for selecting a tasty watermelon when shopping:

  • Look at the outside and ensure it's free from damage
  • Pick it up. Healthy watermelon are about 92 percent water, so it should feel heavy.
  • Turn it over and look for a creamy, yellow ground spot, which indicates it ripened well in the field

Since watermelon contains so much water, they are a great option for electrolyte hydration, Garcia said. You could even sprinkle it with a little salt if you need to. She also likes to freeze extra watermelon cubes for later use as flavored ice cubes in water.

You can make quick and easy popsicles, too, by cutting watermelon into a popsicle shape, sticking the stick in one side, and freezing them. It's a great way to involve kids in making healthy snacks!
