Can You Make It A Full Day Through TTU’s Rough Neck Bootcamp
Living in Texas comes with its perks such as when you drive you have the potential to smell money as it's being pumped through the soil. Obviously, I am referring to the black gold we all love, oil. It's not strange to see oil rigs outside the Lubbock city limits as well as in between small-town cities, they are just common décor when you think of Texas.
Texas Tech recently unveiled their new working campus oil rig to be used this semester so that many college kids can get some real hands on experience before they go into the field. The oil and gas field to be exact. This oil rig is part of the Bob L. Herd Department of Petroleum Engineering and has made Texas Tech the first college in the United States to have an oil rig as part of their campus. While 15 minutes from the main campus, the Oilfield Technology Center is an integral part of the learning experience for petroleum engineering students.
This oil rig has brought with it a great opportunity for those that want to get into the oil and gas industry with the Roughneck Bootcamp. This camp is not an actual bootcamp but a unique way for college students, high school students, and their parents to get an in depth look into this field of study. With real world technology, life size equipment, and industry experts, there is no other opportunity like it.
Benefits of attending include learning about the equipment, procedures, safety, and the rig itself, but also receiving industry advice from professionals in the field, networking opportunities, and resume building ideas. Attendees will have an opportunity to meet other students in the program, industry experts, the department advisor, and the department Chair of Petroleum Engineering himself, Dr. Marshall Watson. Attendees will be able to ask questions, get information, and learn not only about the current oil and gas industry, but the future of the industry and careers in petroleum engineering as well.
This event is for current students, prospective students, and anyone serious about seeing if the industry is for them. Roughneck Bootcamp will be Friday, April 21st with check in at 12:30 pm at the Petroleum Engineering Building on the TTU campus. The camp itself will start on site at 1:30 pm. On the day of Rough Neck Bootcamp you will also get a free t-shirt, while supplies last, and be transported to the oil rig site since it's not on the main campus. Anyone interested must register to this event by emailing rose.cruz@ttu.edu.
