Final ‘Coco’ Trailer Welcomes You to the Land of the Dead
Chances are, by the time you head home for Thanksgiving, you’ll have already seen Justice League — and let’s be honest, there’s no way in hell your mom is going to see that wacky superhero “stuff,” and no amount of Ben Affleck in a rubber suit is going to change her mind. Good thing the final trailer for Pixar’s Coco is here to remind you that there is another, much more family-friendly option for national Eat Turkey in Sweatpants Until You Collapse Into a Coma week.
Not only does Coco look wonderfully different from previous Pixar films — though I’m sure their basic formula largely remains intact — but it just looks wonderful. Inspired by the Mexican Day of the Dead, where people celebrate the lives of loved ones who are no longer with us, Coco centers on Miguel, a young musician whose family does not approve of his aspirations (like how your mom does not approve of you taking her to see Justice League; see, this film is already very relatable). In defiance of his family’s weird music ban, Miguel heads off on a magical journey through the Land of the Dead to explore his secret past:
Despite his family’s baffling generations-old ban on music, Miguel (voice of newcomer Anthony Gonzalez) dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz (voice of Benjamin Bratt). Desperate to prove his talent, Miguel finds himself in the stunning and colorful Land of the Dead following a mysterious chain of events. Along the way, he meets charming trickster Hector (voice of Gael García Bernal), and together, they set off on an extraordinary journey to unlock the real story behind Miguel's family history.
Featuring the voices of newcomer Anthony Gonzalez, Benjamin Bratt, Gael Garcia Bernal, and co-starring a ridiculously adorable animated dog, Coco hits theaters on November 22.
