It's summer and the kids are home. You're trying your best to keep them from crying in unison, 'we're bored' or 'we're hungry' and keep them from grabbing chips or candy.

We talked with Brenda Duby from the United Supermarkets family about this common summer dilemma, and she had some delicious and healthy solutions that the kids will love.

The main thing to remember is that the kids do get hungry and dehydrated when they are out in the sun playing, and that includes when they go swimming.

Brenda said to keep snacks to between 150 and 200 calories and blend the carbs, protein and healthy fats.

She suggested apple slices with peanut butter and even said that chips and salsa are alright every once in a while. Cheese and crackers make a great healthy snack, too.

And we've got to keep those kiddos hydrated, but a lot of kids think plain water is boring. Brenda is a big fan of sparkling water that you can add fruits to, like lemons, limes, orange slices or strawberries. That way your kids will get the sweet without the processed sugar.

Fruit is also a great way to hydrate the kids. Watermelon and cantaloupe are loaded with water. Or you can give them coconut water.

That way we keep nutritious food in their little tummies and we keep them hydrated and healthy.
