Everyone in Lubbock knows that eggs are considered a delicacy food due to inflation. Sort of. This has lead to many people asking how they can save money on buying eggs, like maybe owning their own chickens. There have been a few news outlets cautioning people against salmonella that can be found in backyard poultry such as chickens but that has actually always been the case when it comes to having your own birds.

As someone who has been raising chickens from first day of hatching and into their golden years there is always the possibility of salmonella, mites, and Marek's disease (a type of herpes found in birds). Do not let those reasons discourage you from owning chickens because you can get a sandbox to help with mites, wash your hands after handling your chickens, and you can order chicks that are vaccinated against Marek's disease. They have to be vaccinated after hatching and it's better to let a professional handle that needle on their small bodies.

The Lubbock Memorial Arboretum Foundation hosts an event called Second Saturday where every second Saturday of the month they will have a presenter speak on a topic that they are skilled in. The speaker for the month of February is Sally Doherty who is a Certified Backyard Chicken Keeper and Texas Master Gardener so she is a professional when it comes to both topics. I do hope Doherty gives out tips on how to keep a garden while owning chickens, which if you know chickens then you know keeping a garden, or lawn, is a bit difficult.

This event will be February 11 at the Lubbock Memorial Arboretum, red bricked building, at 4111 University Avenue with doors opening at 9:30 a.m. and the presentation to start at 10:00 a.m.. This event will last until 11 a.m. and is free to the public with no pre-registration necessary, all you have to do is show up on time. Maybe bring your best 'why did the chicken cross the road' joke.
