Every year we hear about how it is illegal to have and set off fireworks in the city limits of Lubbock. And every year we hear from citizens about how their neighbors set off fireworks on July 4th and for days leading up to the holiday.

Some people say their neighborhood sounds like a war zone, others just get annoyed. And yes, some citizens call the Lubbock Police Department or file a report online against their neighbors.

We were curious as to how many calls the Lubbock Police and other authorities received about fireworks this year, and how many citations were issued? So we asked, and now we have answers.

According to the Lubbock Police Department, from July 1 through the 5th, 593 citizen complaints were made in Lubbock about fireworks. 175 of those complaints were actually filed online. The number of citizen complaints was down dramatically from 2022 when Lubbock Police received 1,185 complaints.

So out of the 593 complaints, how many citations were issued? According to Lubbock Municipal Court records, 24 citations were issued between the dates of June 26 until July 9th. Only 3 citations for use of fireworks were issued on July 4th. Lubbock Municipal Court representatives did say that citations were issued by Lubbock Police and the Fire Marshall's Office.

So if you thought it was rare for people to be issued citations for setting off fireworks on July 4th, we will let you decide that now that you have the numbers.
