Lubbock City Council Creates Committee to Study the Future of EMS Services in the City

The Lubbock City Council on Tuesday approved the creation of an ad-hoc committee to study the future of EMS service in Lubbock.

Right now, UMC holds the city’s exclusive EMS services contract through mid-April. Covenant Health has expressed a desire to provide EMS services too.

UMC spokesman, Eric Finley, earlier this week told KFYO's Chad Hasty that UMC is seeking a five-year renewal of their current contract.

The created committee will consist of 13 people and be chaired by District 3 City Councilman Jeff Griffith.

The other members of the committee will be: District 5 Council Representative Karen Gibson; three people appointed by the Lubbock County Hospital Board of Directors, with one of the three a current member of the board; three people appointed by the Covenant Health Board of Directors, with one of the three a current member of the board; one person appointed by the Lubbock County Commissioner’s Court; the Lubbock Fire Department Chief and one deputy chief; one representative from Grace Clinic and one representative from Lubbock Heart Hospital.

The committee will have 45 days to issue a set of non-binding recommendations to the Lubbock City Council.
