Man Who Recorded Doctors Mocking Him During Surgery Wins $500,000
What's that old expression -- if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all?
An unidentified 42-year-old Virginia recently won a $500,000 malpractice lawsuit after he recorded doctors mocking him while he underwent a colonoscopy in 2013.
The man had left his phone on so he could access post-operation instructions, but he wound up recording the whole surgery, during which time the medical staff made fun of him.
Anesthesiologist Tiffany Ingham can be heard saying, "After five minutes of talking to you in pre-op, I wanted to punch you in the face and man you up a little bit."
A medical assistant on hand discussed how the man didn't like seeing a needle in his arm, to which Ingham said, "Well, why are you looking then, retard?" She also made reference to the patient having "tuberculosis in the penis."
Jokes were also made by gastroenterologist Solomon Shah about Ebola, while he, Ingham and a medical assistant all discussed how too many people are hypochondriacs and debated how to get out of talking to the patient after the surgery.
Ingham also poked fun at the man for going to Mary Washington College, which was an all-women's school until the 1970s. She also debated whether he was gay, called him a "big wimp" and wrote on his chart that he had hemorrhoids, even though he didn't.
Ingham, who has reportedly moved to Florida, had no comment on the matter.
