It's a new year but some things don't change once that calendar gets switched out. For example my favorite family member, wardrobe, and go-to waiter at China Star are still the same but some scammers are putting a new twist on their old tricks.

The Lubbock County Sheriff's Office released a statement in regards to a new scam that seems to have some Lubbock residents a bit worried. A press release sent out on Monday, January 30, states that there have been some reports of people receiving calls from someone pretending to be with the Lubbock County Sheriff's Office. That caller then tells the victim that they have a warrant out for their arrest and can clear it up by taking a payment over the phone.

The difference between these newly reported scams and similar scams in the past is that the scammers are doing their homework and using names of real employees. By using these real names they are gaining the trust of the victims so that they can take advantage of them.

What if the caller I.D. says its from the Lubbock County Sheriff's Office? Well these scammers are also spoofing a Lubbock County number which also eases peoples worries when they see the call is local. The Lubbock County Sheriff's Office, or any other law enforcement agency, states that they will NEVER personally call someone to request any form of payment.

KAMC news reported that the Lubbock Police Department hasn't received any reports of impersonators but has been getting reports of callers requesting gift cards. It is way past Christmas so these scammers should get real jobs instead of trying to hustle hard working people out of their money.

If you feel like you have been a victim of a scam report it to the Lubbock Police Department, Lubbock County Sheriff's Office, and also call the whatever company those scammers are claiming to be with.
