It's the time of year for New Year's resolutions. We vow as we eat the last pieces of fudge and down the dregs of the eggnog that January 1 we will stop all of that. And on January 1 around 4 p.m., we fall off the wagon.

We talked with Robin Hawkins with United Supermarket families about how to start the New Year on a positive note.

Her advice is to keep it simple and keep it real. Instead of focusing on what you can't have, focus on what you can have. Instead of saying 'I'm not going to drink anymore sodas,' simply drink more water at first.

Hawkins also had a great point that when we start achieving our weight loss goals, the first thing we want to do is reward ourselves with food. She said that when you drop that first five pounds "instead of having a chicken fried steak, get yourself a manicure or a new work out outfit."

She also added that if you fall off the wagon, that it's absolutely OK. She said we make it so hard on ourselves, setting unattainable goals, that we give up before we enjoy any success.  Robin said to "be good to yourselves and take it easy on yourselves."
