Mayor Pope is urging all citizens to wear face coverings and practice social distancing. His latest Disaster Declaration includes requirements for face coverings in certain circumstances, but there are no civil or criminal penalties for non-compliance.
The bipartisan bill was authored by Congressman Jodey Arrington (R- Lubbock) and Congressman Henry Cuellar (D- Laredo). It would extend I-27 north to Denver and south to Laredo as part of Ports-to-Plains
The event was organized by The 100 Black Men of West Texas. Lubbock Lubbock Mayor Dan Pope and Police Chief Floyd Mitchell were among those who spoke to the crowd, with Mayor Pope speaking about a message of unity and peaceful protests.
"People are starting to get back in the habit of going out, and I think that's good. It's not a lightswitch kind of thing. I don't think we thought it would be, and I think we know it was not. You know, it's more of a gradual rebuild," Pope said.
