Speeding Doesn’t Save Time—It Costs Lives: TxDOT Urges Lubbock Drivers to Slow Down
We all know good things take time—whether it’s reeling in a big one at Lake Alan Henry or letting that brisket rest just right. But when it comes to driving, too many Texans are still trying to rush the process—and it’s costing lives.

Be Safe. Drive Smart.
That’s why the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is turning up the heat this summer with a fresh push to slow drivers down before tragedy strikes. Their latest campaign, “Be Safe. Drive Smart.”, puts the spotlight on the deadly reality of speeding, especially here in West Texas.

According to TxDOT, speeding was a factor in nearly 160,000 traffic crashes across Texas in 2024, claiming 1,467 lives—a staggering 35% of all traffic-related deaths in the state.
TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams said via press release:
Speeding is not an accident, it’s a choice. And it’s a dangerous one. Even just a few miles over the limit can turn a close call into a deadly crash.
Drive Like a Real Texan
To help reverse the trend, TxDOT has teamed up with country artist Parker McCollum to bring the message home: slow down and drive like a real Texan—kind, courteous, and safe.
In addition, TxDOT is partnering with law enforcement agencies across the state for Operation Slowdown, a high-visibility enforcement period that runs through August 3rd. That means officers in Lubbock and beyond are keeping a sharp eye out for lead-footed drivers.
So if you're tempted to floor it down the Loop—don’t. Officers are watching, and they’re not in the mood for excuses.

What You Can Do to Avoid a Ticket (and a Crash)
Adjust your speed when roads are wet, traffic is heavy, or construction is present.
Leave more room between your car and the vehicle ahead.
Watch for posted speed limits, especially in work and school zones—fines double in those areas.
Remember, driving too fast might save you a minute, but it could cost someone their life.
Stay safe, Lubbock. Let’s all agree to slow it down out there. Because at the end of the day, being Texan means taking care of each other—on and off the road!
