U.S. States with the Fewest Coronavirus Restrictions
As the COVID-19 Pandemic continues to spread, the U.S. has had to shut down many events and close a lot of businesses. However, the degree of restrictions widely varies form state to state. To demonstrate this, the personal finance website WalletHub has compiled an updated list of the States with the Fewest Coronavirus Restrictions.
Wallethub compared the 50 states, as well as the District of Columbia, using 18 factors, such as whether the state has penalties for non-compliance with COVID rules, as well as whether the state requires face masks, and health checks at restaurants.
States with the Fewest Restrictions | States with the Most Restrictions |
1. South Dakota | 42. New Mexico |
2. Wisconsin | 43. Vermont |
3. Oklahoma | 44. Arizona |
4. Utah | 45. North Carolina |
5. Iowa | 46. Texas |
T-6. Idaho | 47. Colorado |
T-6. Wyoming | 48. Massachusetts |
8. South Carolina | 49. Pennsylvania |
9. Arkansas | 50. New Jersey |
10. North Dakota | 51. California |
Texas finds itself on position 46 on the list, and falls into WalletHub's "High Restrictions & Also High COVID-19 Death Rate" section of the list.
This list was updated on July 20th, and several states have moved around on the list since the previous report on July 7th. New York has moved up 16 positions from 45 to 29, Maine has moved up 13 positions from 45 to 32, and Pennsylvania has moved down 21 positions from 28 to 49.
WalletHub also included some Q&A, such as should states strictly enforce their restrictions, should states that see spikes in COVID-19 deaths pause their reopening or re-institute lockdown, what should states be most mindful of when reopening, and how have New York's restrictions been impacted after a big decline in new cases.
